Scholarships are a great way to finance your education. Although they are often overlooked, scholarships can provide free money to qualified applicants who complete the process.  Often, scholarships ask for letters of recommendation, an official transcript, and a personal essay. The Health Professions Education Foundation- www.healthprofessions.ca.gov.  Please click here to access scholarships and Loan Repayment programs that offer qualifying students and graduates of the health professions (Dentistry, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistant, Dental Hygiene, and Certified Nurse Midwifery).  All program recipients are required to provide direct patient care in a medically underserved area (MUA) of California as designated by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). The period of obligated professional service is one to three years (depending upon program).

Taxability of Scholarship and other Info

  • This article highlights some key concerns regarding the Financial Aid process and scholarship application process.  Click here to read the article.
  • Your scholarship may or may not be taxable. Generally speaking, a scholarship or fellowship is tax free if you are a degree candidate and the award is used to pay for tuition and required fees, books, supplies and equipment. Any amounts used to pay for room and board and a stipend for living expenses is taxable. IRS Publication 970 discusses scholarships and fellowships, the deductibility of work-related educational expenses, and the various tax benefits for education. click here to read the IRS publication.
  • AB 540 Students

    • AB 540 students are ineligible for Federal and State Financial Aid.
    • AB 540 students may want to research and compile listings of sources of funding for AB540 students.

    Educators for Fair Consideration New American Fund-Provides financial awards and student services for low-income immigrant college students living in the San Francisco Bay Area. For 2009, awards will be given in the amount of $2,500 - $5,000. In addition to financial awards, the scholarship provides ongoing support services.     MALDEF - www.maldef.org. The Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund has a list of scholarships available to students, regardless of citizenship status, click here to view the scholarship directory in PDF format.
