College Governance

Greetings from the President

You may have read in the newspaper that Chabot College recently selected a new president--the first woman to hold this position in the 47-year history of the college.  It is my joy and honor to have been the one selected.

My life journey brings me to your doorsteps from Nicaragua where I was born.  After being awarded a scholarship to study in the United States, I completed a bachelor's degree at Findlay College followed by a master's and Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University.  Both of these institutions are in Ohio, the Buckeye State.  I smile as I write this because those were very fruitful and fun-filled years, but less so in the winter.

For more than 20 years I have lived in California.  This state has afforded me the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learned in Ohio through a challenging career in community college education.  My last assignment was as Vice President for Student Services at Hartnell College in Salinas.  As I have grown in my sphere of influence, I have always remembered that I am rooted in the immigrant experience, grateful to a country where persistence and a strong work ethic serve as a catalyst for career advancement.

If you have been a resident of Hayward, San Lorenzo, Union City, San Leandro, Castro Valley and surrounding communities, you know that Chabot College has a tradition of excellence. That is why we choose to work here. At Chabot, you learn from communication and contact with dedicated instructors whose rich life experiences motivate and inspire. Our students come to us from diverse backgrounds and ages - from teenagers to senior citizens. If you know you want to grow and learn, come to us. If you don't, trained professionals will engage you in selecting a field of study and finding the resources to finance your education.

Come to experience what Chabot has to offer. You won't regret it. We are only a few miles or a phone call away.

Celia Barberena, Ph.D.
