Chabot College Now Offering Credit Classes at San Leandro Adult School
$500,000 Gift from Chabot College Foundation Provides Funding for Partnership
(Hayward, CA) - Last month when Chabot College President Robert Carlson presented a check for $500,000 to San Leandro School District Superintendent Christine Lim at a school board meeting, it sealed the partnership for bringing higher education to the San Leandro community. The gift, which came from the Chabot College Foundation, will complete the funding for the construction of a facility which will serve both adult and traditional students.
Gordon Galvan, Foundation vice chair, was thrilled to be part of this historic partnership. “I was born and raised in San Leandro and I’m a former Chabot student,” says Galvan. “So I’m proud and excited to be part of the Foundation which is providing the financial support to bring higher education courses to my community.”
President Carlson also feels strongly about the impact this will have for
area students. “The partnership will allow us to establish a much-needed
education center that will have an impact over the years for the Mt Eden region,”
says Dr. Carlson. “It also demonstrates an important link between the
education process and the opportunities presented through our local community
college. I am very pleased with the work our Foundation has done in developing
the partnership.
The newly constructed facility is part of the SLUSD Adult Education Center,
located next to John Muir School at 1448 Williams Street in San Leandro. Chabot
College will provide management and instruction within the Center, expanding
its educational services with adult training, seminars, children’s summer
school, and in-service training programs for the K-12 faculty of the SLUSD.
Programs will be designed to improve instruction and increase the number of
high school seniors going into higher education.
The partnership is supported through an $800,000 award made to the Chabot College Foundation by the Oakland-based Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation (the additional $300,000 will be used over the next three years for curriculum development). The Valley Foundation is a prominent philanthropic organization established by San Leandro community members Mr. and Mrs. Valley 30 years ago to provide financial assistance to various endeavors in the East Bay. Education was targeted as one of the primary areas designated for grants, and the Chabot-San Leandro Education Center exemplifies the type of project they traditionally support.
