Chabot College Foundation Funds Joint Venture
Chabot College-San Leandro Unified School District Announce Partnership
(Hayward, CA) - The Chabot College Foundation is proud to announce that it recently secured much-needed funds to pave the way for a long-term partnership between Chabot College and the San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD). The award marks the largest private gift given to the College or the Foundation in the past 45 years.
The Chabot College Foundation was awarded the $800,000 grant which directs $500,000 to the final costs for the construction of the facility, located next to John Muir School at 1444 Williams Street in San Leandro. Additionally, the grant earmarks $300,000 over three-years (fiscal 2006-2008) to support the curriculum development for this educational partnership. “We are pleased to provide this level of support to the College”, said Chabot College Foundation Chair, John Gutierrez.
The newly developed partnership will be housed in the SLUSD Adult Education Center which will serve both adult and traditional student populations. Chabot College will provide management and instruction within the Center expanding its educational services with adult training, seminars, summer school programs for children, and in-service training programs for the K-12 faculty of the San Leandro School District. Programs will be designed to improve instruction and increase the number of high school seniors transitioning into institutions of higher education.
“This grant will allow us to establish a much-needed education center that will make a historical impact over the years for students of all ages in the Mt. Eden region,” says Dr. Robert Carlson, Chabot College President. “It also demonstrates an important link between the K-12 education process and the opportunities presented through our local community college.”
The grant was awarded to the Chabot College Foundation by the Oakland based Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation. The Valley Foundation is a prominent philanthropic organization established by San Leandro community members Mr. & Mrs. Valley 30 years ago to provide financial assistance to various endeavors in the East Bay. Education was targeted as one of the primary areas designated for grants, and the Chabot-San Leandro Education Center exemplifies the type of project they traditionally support.
