Chabot-San Leandro Education Center Opens For Business with Compelling

Classes Chabot College and San Leandro School District Collaborate on New
Education Center for Mt. Eden Area
(Hayward, CA) - The Chabot-San Leandro Education Center kicks off its inaugural semester on August 27 with a roster of 15 classes that span the gamut from Humanities and Language Arts, to Math and Business. Students can also choose from Beginning and Intermediate Sign Language, Real Estate Principles, and an English as a Second Language (ESL) course designed to help students function within an academic environment. Class registration will take place during the first week of classes at the center, located at 1448 Williams Street in San Leandro. Fees are just $20 per unit and students may also register online at www.chabotcollege.edu
Development of the Center has been underway for the past year through the generosity of an $800,000 grant from the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation, a major philanthropic institution established 30 years ago to provide financial assistance to various endeavors in the East Bay. The gift was made to the Chabot College Foundation.
“As a native of San Leandro and Chabot College alum, I’m very proud to serve on a Foundation that brings higher education courses to my community,” said Foundation Vice-Chair Gordon Galvan.
Approximately $500,000 of the grant went toward the construction of the facility, located next to John Muir School, at a site that is shared with the San Leandro Adult School. The center is open to the public and adult school students are encouraged to take classes, along with high school students in the region who can enroll concurrently.
“The Center offers yet another pathway for students seeking entry-level classes to refine basic skills, pursue a college degree, or begin training for a career,” says Dr. Rosemary Delia, Director of the Chabot-San Leandro Education Center. Under the management of the San Leandro Unified School District, the Center will serve both adult and traditional student populations. Chabot College will provide management and instruction for its future extension campus with adult training and seminars, summer school programs for children, and in-service training programs for the K-12 faculty of the San Leandro School District. These programs will be designed to improve instruction and increase the number of high school seniors transitioning into institutions of higher education.
